A popular trend on forums these days is user reputation (voted on by other users on the forum).

I think this would end up being a Xaraya Module that could be hooked into CrispBB. I like the idea though.

I think ratings hooked to roles would do the trick no?

Yes and no, most systems are a little more complicated then our ratings module. It could maybe be loosely based on the ratings module though.

If you remember at one point I posted a thread about user reputation/karma. It might have been on the dev site though.

Fair enough, I was just going off the basics of the FR,

which lends itself nicely to the ratings vote module, just need to over-ride templates to display a rating based on votes.

The whole ratings thing though extends beyond just the forums, which as you say Robert, points to a module for the task (that wasn't me volunteering, btw - I got enough to be going on with Smile )

shebang developed the code for karma on a vbulletin, for the overgrow site. Gadabout shaped it into his mojo feature on vbulletin planetganja.com Both sites were very successful.
in a large part due to the content, but shined above other ganja sites because of the karma/mojo feature. Now gadabout just closed up shop, and I have reopened the site with a planetganja.net domain name. I am attempting to recover the .com name as it was originally mine, but I gave it to gad when he said he could host the site in canada.
He did a good job, but got the wrong folks involved with the site, and claims they stole the hardware and evrything while he was on vacation.
I looked at userpoints mod and think that could be modded into a karma/mojo mod.
Im excited about building the new site on xaraya, as I am going to work in some realms for a strain database, and a sick plant trouble shooter.
But if the karma/mojo feature could be working, that would really put me over the top with the members from the previous sites.
anyway, Im proud of what I got done in a weekend so far and plan on building back up to the 10,000 member site that overgrow managed.

Maybe the ratings module could be overhauled to handle this type of stuff. It would add a lot of other functionality in other modules using ratings...

I found that the reputation thing in vBulletin allows for negative, positive, and neutral reputation points to be given to a user. It let's a user know what post they received rep from and from who. Also, it uses some algorithm to calculate how the user's rep is affected depending on their current reputation points and the rep level of the person giving the rep.

Yep, I've seen that in action elsewhere. Not really what userpoints does, more akin to ratings but with the addition of being able to mark down as well as up (negative ratings, really)

Will it incorporate weighing a users rating based on their rep "power?"

Ok, I have hooked ratings module to role module, and hacked the customized area of template so now I have crude user rep system. I use an image to display the rating instead of a numerical score.

well, it appears to work, but after further testing,
it seems that users share the highest score.
Apparently, all users share the same xar_type=0
Ratings does not know how to sort it out, and xar_type is so embedded in the code, I wouldnt know where to begin in hacking it to work.
User Points must be the key to a user rep.
The files which need to be edited are fewer, but still beyond my knowledge as a user, and not a developer.
