RSSextra: Headlines module add-on block

Last modified on Sep 7, 2008 07:33:32 AM by Crisp [ #permalink ]

RSSextra is an add-on block for the Headlines module. It is intended to be used as a replacement for the default Headlines RSS block, providing the same functionality and more.

Install

The archive comprises of three files. rssextra.php is the block function and must be placed in {webroot}/modules/headlines/xarblocks/ folder. rssextra.xd and modify-rssextra.xd should be placed in {webroot}/modules/headlines/xartemplates/blocks folder. Copy and over-ride these as necessary.

Register Block

Having copied the files as directed, you will then need to register the block in Xaraya. To do this go to Admin Blocks > Block Types > Add New Block Type. In the dropdown that appears select Headlines, then click Scan Module. A list of all Headline blocks that Xaraya found will appear. Select rssextra from the list, then click Add Block Type. Once you've done this you can click on Add Block and proceed to create an RSSextra block as you would any other Xaraya block.

Configure

As well as having the same functionality as the Headlines RSS block, RSSextra also provides the following functionality

  • Ability to use an alternative feed title, like you can in the headlines module itself
  • Ability to use an alternative feed description
  • Specify an alternative channel url to link to
  • Optionally truncate long item descriptions in feeds, handy for when a feed provides the entire post in the description
  • For feeds which have an entry in the Headlines module, optionally provide a link to view that feed
  • Changes to headlines module feed urls are instantly picked up in blocks, subject to caching permutations

Note:This block is now deprecated. A new version of the Headlines module is available here - Xaraya Headlines Module Download. The default RSS block has been updated to incorporate all the features of RSSextra.
